Hilary Marlow: Biblical Prophets and Contemporary Environmental Ethics

Biblical Prophets and Contemporary Environmental Ethics

Description

In the context of growing concern over climate change and other environmental pressures, Biblical Prophets and Contemporary Environmental Ethics explores what an ecological reading of the biblical text can contribute to contemporary environmental ethics. The Judaeo-Christian tradition has been held partly to blame for a negative attitude to creation - one that has legitimised the exploitative use of the earth's resources. Hilary Marlow explores some of the thinking in the history of the Christian tradition that has contributed to such a perception, before discussing a number of approaches to reading the Old Testament from an ecological perspective. Through a detailed exegetical study of the texts of the biblical prophets Amos, Hosea, and First Isaiah, Marlow examines the portrayal of the relationship between YHWH the God of Israel, humanity and the non-human creation. In the course of this exegesis, searching questions emerge: what are the various understandings of the non-human creation that are present in the text? What assumptions are made about YHWH's relationship to the created world and how he acts within it? And what effect do the actions and choices of human beings have on the created world? Following this close textual study, Marlow examines the problem of deriving ethical norms from the biblical text and discusses some key ethical debates in contemporary environmental theory. The book explores the potential contribution of the biblical exegesis to such debates and concludes by proposing an inter-relational model for reading the Old Testament prophets in the light of contemporary environmental ethics.

Sarah Fielding: The Governess : Or, The Little Female Academy

The Governess : Or, The Little Female Academy

Description

First published in 1749 and reissued here in its 1765 printing, this novel by Sarah Fielding (1710-68) attempts to encourage young women to lives of virtue and benevolence through the story of nine girls living with their governess, Mrs Teachum, in a school in the north of England. The girls, aged between eleven and fourteen years old, learn the feminine graces and manners from various lessons and field trips organised by their teacher, as well as through the tales they tell each other. Skilled in conveying moral messages in this educational context, Fielding, whose brother was the novelist Henry Fielding, had also published anonymously The Adventures of David Simple (1744). The present work is particularly notable for being the first novel written in English expressly for children. An important text in eighteenth-century literature, it will appeal especially to readers interested in the history of women's education.

For fans of "The Hunger Games, Divergent, "and" Red Rising" comes a gripping sci-fi adventure in which a group of teenagers wake up in a mysterious corridor with no knowledge of who they are or how they got trapped. Their only hope lies with an indomitable young woman who must lead them not only to answers but to survival. Designing and Making Hats and Headpieces is an inspiring and instructional guide to the art of millinery. It explains how to go about designing a hat, what equipment and materials you will need, and the techniques required to get started. It divides the projects into three types of hat - blocked, headpieces and fascinators, and cut and sewn - and thereby describes how to make fourteen different designs. It goes on to suggest ways of finishing the hats with embellishments such as bows, felt, veiling and flowers. Drawing on her rich experience, the author generously shares her ideas and her advice so that you can achieve a professional finish and make The Governess : Or, The Little Female Academy download ebook a design that flatters the wearer and completes an outfit. With beautiful photographs and clear instructions, this book is an essential guide for anyone who wants to design and make a hat for a daily outing, a special occasion or a costume.

The Learning Disability Myth : Understanding and Overcoming Your Child's Diagnosis of Dyspraxia, Dyslexia, Tourette's Syndrome of Childhood, Add, ADHD or Ocd

Description

At least one child in five experiences some form of learning difficulty, however, learning difficulties as we understand them do not exist--they are not diseases, just symptoms. These symptoms never appear alone and are treatable and avoidable. Here, an expert in child neurology approaches learning difficulties of childhood--including dyslexia, ADD, OCD, ADHD, dyspraxia and Tourette's syndrome--from a truly groundbreaking perspective. All human babies are born prematurely and develop special, new brain cells four months after birth. Every human's development in the womb and particularly in these early stages of life can, therefore, be affected by developmental delay, which can blight childhood and marginalize a child at school. Since our brains continue to grow, however, the symptoms can also be treated. This book explains the background to human developmental delay and offers advice on how to get the best assessment for your child and an explanation of what the examination must include; the effects--good and bad--of certain foods on the brain; exercises and computer programs that you can use to expand your child's neural function; and case histories of children on whom this plan has worked. In the single biggest breakthrough in the history of learning difficulties, this guide explains the cause of developmental delay syndromes using simple, easy-to-follow tips to show how to greatly reduce the risk of a child suffering from them, and gives advice on what can be done to treat those children that do.

How to Travel Without Seeing: Dispatches from the New Latin America

Description

A dizzying, fast-paced tour of Latin America provides one of the Spanish-speaking world s most outstanding writers with the occasion for an experimental travelogue somewhere between personal diary and critical essay. Lamenting not having more time to get to know each of the nineteen countries he visits after winning the Premio Alfaguara, Andres Neuman concludes that world travel consists mostly of not seeing. Turning the fleeting nature of his trip into a creative and critical advantage, he writes on planes and in airports and hotel rooms to produce a work that is whimsical and fun, poetic and aphoristic. A dual Argentine-Spanish citizen, Neuman offers incisive insight into cultural identity and nationality, immigration and globalization, history and language. The enigmatic "How to Travel Without Seeing" is a must-read for anyone interested in our neighbors to the south and their current literature."

In this clever twist on the age-old belief that there s no such thing as unicorns, Uni the unicorn is told there s no such thing as little girls! No matter what the grown-up unicorns say, Uni believes that little girls are real. Somewhere there must be a smart, strong, wonderful, magical little girl waiting to be best friends. In fact, far away (but not too far), a real little girl believes there is a unicorn waiting for her. This refreshing and sweet story of friendship reminds believers and nonbelievers alike that sometimes wishes really can come true." For more special days when you have a little more time on your hands there is an Easy Entertaining section complete with menu suggestions and time-saving tips. How to Travel Without Seeing: Dispatches from the New Latin America free download pdf Shows how to reframe common problems in such a way that powerful scientific and statistical concepts (such as law of large numbers, statistical regression, cost-benefit analysis) can be applied to them. The result is an enlightening and practical guide to the most powerful tools of reasoning ever developed - tools that can easily be used to make better professional, business, and personal decisions.

P53: The Gene That Cracked the Cancer Code

Description

All of us have lurking in our DNA a most remarkable gene, which has a crucial job - it protects us from cancer. Known simply as p53, this gene constantly scans our cells to ensure that they grow and divide without mishap, as part of the routine maintenance of our bodies. If a cell makes a mistake in copying its DNA during the process of division, p53 stops it in its tracks, summoning a repair team before allowing the cell to carry on dividing. If the mistake is irreparable and the rogue cell threatens to grow out of control, p53 commands the cell to commit suicide. Cancer cannot develop unless p53 itself is damaged or prevented from functioning normally. Perhaps unsurprisingly, p53 is the most studied single gene in history. This book tells the story of medical science's mission to unravel the mysteries of this crucial gene, and to get to the heart of what happens in our cells when they turn cancerous. Through the personal accounts of key researchers, p53: The Gene that Cracked the Cancer Code reveals the fascination of the quest for scientific understanding, as well as the huge excitement of the chase for new cures - the hype, the enthusiasm, the lost opportunities, the blind alleys, and the thrilling breakthroughs. And as the long-anticipated revolution in cancer treatment tailored to each individual patient's symptoms begins to take off at last, p53 remains at the cutting edge. This timely tale of scientific discovery highlights the tremendous recent advances made in our understanding of cancer, a disease that affects more than one in three of us at some point in our lives.

Paul Bushkovitch: A Concise History of Russia

A Concise History of Russia

Description

Accessible to students, tourists and general readers alike, this book provides a broad overview of Russian history since the ninth century. Paul Bushkovitch emphasizes the enormous changes in the understanding of Russian history resulting from the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, new material has come to light on the history of the Soviet era, providing new conceptions of Russia's pre-revolutionary past. The book traces not only the political history of Russia, but also developments in its literature, art and science. Bushkovitch describes well-known cultural figures, such as Chekhov, Tolstoy and Mendeleev, in their institutional and historical contexts. Though the 1917 revolution, the resulting Soviet system and the Cold War were a crucial part of Russian and world history, Bushkovitch presents earlier developments as more than just a prelude to Bolshevik power.

In margin icons indicate when additional resources are available online including: videos, further reading, weblinks and printouts. The book is essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the social sciences embarking on qualitative or quantitative research projects. This is the story of one of the most important classical cities, Syracuse, and A Concise History of Russia download book its struggles (both internal and external) for freedom and survival. Situated at the heart of the mediterranean, Syracuse was caught in the middle as Carthage, Pyrrhus of Epirus, Athens and then Rome battled to gain control of Sicily. The threat of expansionist enemies on all sides made for a tumultuous situation within the city, resulting in repeated coups that threw up a series of remarkable tyrants, such as Gelon, Timoleon and Dionysius. In this second volume, Jeff Champion follows the course of the city' s wars from the death of Dionysius II down to the final epic siege of the city in 213-211 BC. This ended with the final capture of the city by the Romans, despite the heroic and resourceful resistance of the Syracusans and the ingenious inventions of Archimedes. It is a story full of dramatic battles and epic sieges, heroism and skullduggery.

House of Cards: How Wall Street's Gamblers Broke Capitalism

Description

From the author of The Last Tycoons, William D. Cohan's international bestseller House of Cards: How Wall Street's Gamblers Broke Capitalism dissects the collapse of Bear Stearns and the beginning of the financial crisis. It was Wall Street's toughest investment bank, taking risks where others feared to tread, run by testosterone-fuelled gamblers who hung a sign saying 'let's make nothing but money' over the trading floor. Yet in March 2008 the 85-year-old firm Bear Stearns was brought to its knees - and global economic meltdown began. With unprecedented access to the people at the eye of the financial storm, William Cohan tells the outrageous story of how Wall Street's entire house of cards came crashing down. 'A page-turner ...hard to put down, especially thanks to its dishy, often profane, quotes from insiders ...Read it, learn - and weep' Observer 'A fly-on-the-wall record ...Cohan is a master of this genre. He perfectly captures the raw voice of Wall Street ...like Damon Runyon updated by Martin Scorsese' Spectator Business 'Action-packed ...gripping' Sunday Times 'A devastating account of the foul-mouthed, money-grabbing men responsible for Bear Stearns' collapse' Business Week William D. Cohan was an award-winning investigative journalist before embarking on a seventeen-year career as an investment banker on Wall Street. His first book, The Last Tycoons, about Lazard, won the 2007 Financial Times/Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Award and was a New York Times bestseller. His second book, House of Cards, also a bestseller, is an account of the last days of Bear Stearns & Co.

Roger Scruton: The Soul of the World

The Soul of the World

Description

In The Soul of the World, renowned philosopher Roger Scruton defends the experience of the sacred against today's fashionable forms of atheism. He argues that our personal relationships, moral intuitions, and aesthetic judgments hint at a transcendent dimension that cannot be understood through the lens of science alone. To be fully alive--and to understand what we are--is to acknowledge the reality of sacred things. Rather than an argument for the existence of God, or a defense of the truth of religion, the book is an extended reflection on why a sense of the sacred is essential to human life--and what the final loss of the sacred would mean. In short, the book addresses the most important question of modernity: what is left of our aspirations after science has delivered its verdict about what we are? Drawing on art, architecture, music, and literature, Scruton suggests that the highest forms of human experience and expression tell the story of our religious need, and of our quest for the being who might answer it, and that this search for the sacred endows the world with a soul. Evolution cannot explain our conception of the sacred; neuroscience is irrelevant to our interpersonal relationships, which provide a model for our posture toward God; and scientific understanding has nothing to say about the experience of beauty, which provides a God's-eye perspective on reality. Ultimately, a world without the sacred would be a completely different world--one in which we humans are not truly at home. Yet despite the shrinking place for the sacred in today's world, Scruton says, the paths to transcendence remain open.

This is the first book to provide a wide range of leading-edge, step-by-step strategies for The Soul of the World pdf clinicians using EMDR therapy and adjunct approaches with children with severe dysregulation of the affective system. Written by an author internationally known for her innovative work with children, the book offers developmentally appropriate and advanced tools for using EMDR therapy in treating children with complex trauma, attachment wounds, dissociative tendencies, and compromised social engagement. The book also presents the theoretical framework for case conceptualisation in EMDR therapy and in the use of the Adaptive Information Processing model with children. Principles and concepts derived from the Polyvagal Theory, affective neuroscience, attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, developmental neuroscience and the neurosequential model of therapeutics, which can greatly support and expand our understanding of the AIP model and complex trauma, are presented. The text also offers an original and pioneering EMDR therapy-based model to working with parents with abdicated caregiving systems.

Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea

Description

A National Book Award finalist and National Book Critics Circle finalist, Barbara Demick s "Nothing to Envy" is a remarkable view into North Korea, as seen through the lives of six ordinary citizens "Nothing to Envy "follows the lives of six North Koreans over fifteen years a chaotic period that saw the death of Kim Il-sung, the unchallenged rise to power of his son Kim Jong-il, and the devastation of a far-ranging famine that killed one-fifth of the population. Taking us into a landscape most of us have never before seen, award-winning journalist Barbara Demick brings to life what it means to be living under the most repressive totalitarian regime today an Orwellian world that is by choice not connected to the Internet, in which radio and television dials are welded to the one government station, and where displays of affection are punished; a police state where informants are rewarded and where an offhand remark can send a person to the gulag for life. Demick takes us deep inside the country, beyond the reach of government censors. Through meticulous and sensitive reporting, we see her six subjects average North Korean citizens fall in love, raise families, nurture ambitions, and struggle for survival. One by one, we experience the moments when they realize that their government has betrayed them. "Nothing to Envy "is a groundbreaking addition to the literature of totalitarianism and an eye-opening look at a closed world that is of increasing global importance."
